A weekend of Mixed results...
After suffering the 2 – 1 defeat to Chelmsford Warriors at the start of the 2012 the Islanders were looking for some redemption against the Bristol Pitbulls and set them back onto their winning streak.
With a hard fought battle the Peterborough Islanders played a great end to end game of hockey at home to Bristol edging the win 6 – 5. Scoring two goals from Ross Horsley early in the 1st period the Islanders looked set to be firmly in control of the game. However, unlike in Bristol, the Pitbulls this time put up more of a fight and played a much closer game.
Midway through the second period the Islanders continued to light the lamp scoring with a goal from Dale Jowett and quickly followed by James Pentecost taking the score to 4 – 0, but this 4 goal lead was short lived when the Pitbulls scored their first of the game with just 5 minutes left in the 2nd period.
The third period continued with the same frenetic pace as each of the previous two periods but also saw the Islanders shorthanded for a large proportion of the period with both Dale Jowett and Leon Groom sitting a number of penalties. Early in the Period the Pitbulls scored their 2nd goal and then just 7 minutes later scored their 3rd bringing the score to 4 – 3 in favor of the Islanders. Not willing to lose this game the Islanders Jopnathon Brammall rose to the challenge and scored once more regaining a 2 goal lead over their opponents, and then increasing this lead with an excellent game winning five hole shorthanded goal veteran of the sport Steve Wren. Not giving up without a fight the Pitbulls quickly scored on the Power Play and then once more with just 1 second on the clock.
Final Score Islanders 6, Pitbulls 5.
Playing the second game of the Weekend the Peterborough Islanders travelled down to Solent & Gosport to take on top spot contenders Solent & Gosport Devils. After such a close fought battle in their previous engagement the Islanders were looking to avenge the loss they suffered at home earlier in the year.
From the drop of the first puck the Islanders looked to gain the zone, and get in the Devils face, but the Devils stayed strong and forced the play down in the Islanders Zone, centering the puck and firing on net. Within the first 5 minutes Simon Wren had already had to make a number of crucial saves to keep the Islanders in the Game but was unfortunately beaten by a centering pass and one time shot into the net. Fired up by this goal the Islanders took the game to Gosport and forced their way into the Devils Zone, and force the netminder to freeze the puck and get the face off in the Devils Zone. But with 15 minutes gone in the 1st, the Devils scored again and then once more just 2 minutes from the end of the 1st.
Part way through the second period the Islanders had control of the puck behind the Devils net, but from behind a Devils Defenseman swiped James Pentecost feet from underneath him causing his to smash his head off the ice resulting in James needing hospital treatment. With the Devils in control of the Game the Islanders continued to fight hard breaking in to the attacking zones and making plays to try and reduce the lead that the devils had produced.
End of the second period the Islanders were down 8 – 0.
Starting the final period the Devils got another early goal, but still with the strength and determination for a goal Nathan Pollard managed to light the lamp with an unassisted goal passed the Solent Netminder. After scoring their first goal of the Game Simon Price replaced Simon Wren in net. Facing a number of shots early Price unfortunately allowed his 1st goal in just minutes after coming onto the ice. But with true Islander spirit the team did not give up on each other and continued to play hard and fight for one another. With Just 10 minutes to go, the Devils were once more in control of the puck in the Islanders Zone, and slipped another hard shot passed the Islanders netminder and then one more with just seconds to go in the game.
Final Score Islanders 1, Devils 12
